File system archiving - backup mode

I need a solution

Hi All,

I started to learn File System archiving and not so sure about the backup strategies for this.

Is it the same as exchange file system archiving?

Is backup mode required?

Is the partition in read only mode during the backup mode, just like in the exchange archiving?

Thanks, :)

Archive Explorer - I can see more archives than I should be able to

I need a solution

I have discovered I can see things in Archive Explorer I don't believe I should have permission too

It's random as well - see screen shot below. Some archives I can open and see all sub folders and all emails. Some just calendar, or Restored folders...like I say random.

I'm logged in as a test user, check Credential Manager has cached any passwords. It's not impersonating the EV account. I've looked at the following Technote:

http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH194906

Check this is configured - it is

Ev is 10.0.2.1112

Any ideas what I can look next?

check it out. I can see everything of Lawrence. Certain things of Nicky and Christian. Nothing of Malcolm, Anant and Louise??

I need a solution

Hello,

When i run archiving task, i see in reports next:

path_to_file\file.txt Default FSA Volume Policy    All Files    ARCHIVE    Archived    CREATESHORTCUTSIMMEDIATELY    ShortcutNotCreated

So as i ynderstand correctly, shortcuts cannot be created until backup of vault store partition run. Currently i am using EV for testng i dont need to secure it, i just need to archive data and look what it is looks like. All my data is test data, i am not afraide to loose it. So how can i disable requirement for archiving? Is this possible to do permanently for any tasks in EV?

EVPM INI File to Archive Additional Message Class

I need a solution

Hi,

We currently do not archive the IPM.Appointment message class, I would like to enable it but change the archiving rule to 2 years rather than our 90 days standard.

I have put together the below EVPM INI file but how do I specify the message class?

Do I have to set this policy on all mailboxes first and then change the Exchange Mailbox policy to include the IPM.Appointment message class? or can I include a message class in the filter?

I'm using EV 9.0.5.

Any help with would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Enterprise Vault version best practices

I need a solution

Hi

As the title suggests I just need a little information as to Symantec's recommended best practise for versioning on Enterprise Vault for Exchange.

We are currently running EV 10.0.3 and the Outlook client through our business.

There are a couple of machines which have Outlook 2013 SP1, and we have had to install the 10.0.4 CFH2 Outlook client onto these to ensure these people can access their vaults and I was wondering if this was something Symantec would suggest we don't do and if so why that would be.

From what we can tell, everything seems to be working fine, but we are quite new to this product and wanted to make sure that we aren't going to be causing ourselves future issues.

Thanks

Matt

Index in backup mode while event show the opposite?

I need a solution

Hi All,

I have an EV server installed, backed up by NBU with EV agent for NBU Backup.

All backup are successful, and events in EV server show:

Successfully cleared backup mode from the following index location.

Enabling additions, deletions, and updates because the index location is not in backup mode.

Index Location: E:\Index\index3

(8 repeating events for 8 index locations),

However – EV monitor states that index is in backup mode, and when checking in VAC the Indexing services – they are marked on backup mode.

So – I take them out of backup mode manually.

Anyone knows what can cause the events to say that backup mode cleared while actually still in backup mode?

Unable to Manually Store Items using the Store Button in Outlook.

I need a solution

We have multiple users including myself that when attempting to manually archive an item using the Store In Vault button in Outlook, the item changes to pending and then changes back to a full item. Its the same problem mentioned in Article URL http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH161459 however we do not have Archive Usage Limits set. Also I do not see Events 3172 and 2270 logged in the Event Viewer. I am able to restore items.

Email folder will not archive

I'm running Enterprise Vault 10.0.4 on Windows Server 2008 R2 to archive mail from an Exchange 2010 implementation.  There's one particular user with an Inbox that won't archive.  All of his other mail folders archive fine.  The messages in his inbox have the icon that suggests they're marked to be archived, but they're never pulled into his Vault.  I tried zapping his mailbox already with no luck.  Mailbox properties show Enterprise Vault is enabled for his mailbox and it says "You cannot change these settings" on the client, so I don't believe he disabled this folder from archiving.  Is there anything I should try?

Thanks

Migrating Archives via PST - site to site.

I need a solution

Hi All,

Curious one here. We have a requirement to migrate mailboxes and user archives, from one site and domain, to another. There are no trusts in place between domains, and due to highly robust security, any sort of connectivity between the two sites/domains is also very limited.

All of this, essentially means that at this stage the archived data must be exported, then moved to a secure 'staging' area, where it is scanned for malware, before being imported into the users mailbox on the other side (speeds, and isses around calender item corruption occuring when ingested directly to EV).

The scan for malware, is a policy decision made by the security team. This is a pain point, as manual intervention is required in a number of steps before the User has access to their archived data after they too have been migrated. AV scanning already occurs at both source, and destination - but it appears to be locked in place.

So, essentially I have a couple of questions:

1) Is there a tool that can export/unpack/scan/repack/import .pst files - that is EV aware, or do any of the migrate tools on the market include real time AV scanning as the process items?

2) Am I missing something here. Are there any recommended best practice steps to use. We're looking them at running in batches, and ingestion speed doesn't appear to be much of an issue. It's just obviously, a pain.

3) In the event, we can actually be granted the ability to allow the two EV sites to be able to see each other and use the move archive wizard - If I recall, the move archive wizard essentially exports to a temporary .pst, and moves that across. Is that basically how it works?

Thanks in advance.

I need a solution

Hi

I am quite new to EV and yet have to start vaulting an entire business soon.

If anyone could help with the below that would be great, we have just upgraded to 10.0.4:

  • How can you tell how far through the archiving process a mailbox is, you set them off but i have no idea of know where it is upto?
  • I'd like to be able to estimate how long it will take to EV a mailbox?
  • It is possible to be able to select a mailbox and see how much it will shrink when EV'd?
  • We have lots of PST's some old some current any idea how to tell which ones the user's actually have connected to their clients?

Any pointers would help

Thanks

Server Migration Wizard fails with Error: Database EnterpriseVaultDirectory schema version is invalid

I need a solution

Hello,

I'm using the SSMW (Server Settings Migration Wizard) to migrate the EV server version (10.0.4) from low hardware server specifications to a new high server.

I've followed the steps in HOWTO42445 but when i'm importing the package into the new server, i got an error say "Database EnterpriseVaultDirectory schema version is invaild"

However, i'm using the same EV version 10.0.4 and didn't change anything on the SQL (it's on a different server).

When i run some query like: "Select * from MonitoringSettings" it say schema version 7.4.4.5.0

"Select SchemaVersion from DirectoryEntry" it tell the version is 10.125.5.137.0

Does anyone see this error before ? thanks for you advanced help.

I note that in the current Enterprise Vault Compatibility Chart, that support for Windows 2012 R2 is still pending as of version 10.0.4 .

Does Symantec have a timeframe and version number for support of the installation of EV on the Windows 2012 R2 platform  ?

Thanks

Re-Archive an Exchange Mailbox

I need a solution

Greetings,

We are currently testing EVault for Exchange archiving.

I archived a user's entire mailbox by creating a policy that is based upon age only...and selecting 0 days old for archiving.  The archive tasks ran fine...and archived the entire mailbox successfuly.

Since this was a test, I then proceeded to delete the just created archive via the admin GUI.

I disabled the mailbox...then re-enabled the mailbox...thus creating a new empty EVault archive.  I then re-ran the archive task for this one user...however, even though the original archive was deleted normally....it now only archives new items.

Running a DTrace revealed that the other itmes were not being selected for archive becasue they have "not been modified"....here are my questions:

1) What is EVault comparing with the Exchange mailbox item's modified date to make the decision that the item has not changed. It wiould seem to me that when an archive is deleted...all of its archived content would also be deleted from EVault's data tables...thus, it would not be aware of an existing archive date for these items.

2) What can be done to override this inherit logic and force a re-archive of the entire mailbox contents?  I have tried setting the IgnoreEVDates registry value to 3 without success.

Any help would be appreciated.  This just seems too difficult for a relatively easy operation. I'm sure I am not the first user to test the product by archiving something...deleting the test archive...and then want to re-archive the same content in production.

Thanks,

Dr Gary

EV9.0.2 - FSA migration questions

I need a solution

Hi

I need to migrate placeholders from a NetApp vFiler to a Windows 2008 R2 server.

Environment is EV 9.0.2

This is the high level plan:

Copy all folders from source to target so directory structure matches

Stop and disable the FSA archiving task

Use FSAutility.exe to migrate placeholders and archivepoint:

FSAUtility.exe -pm -s \\source -d \\target -l 0

Manually robocopy any (edit - NON) archived files from source to target

Create a new folder target (the target server already exists in the EV hierarchy)

Enable and start the FSA archiving task

Does this sound correct? Am I right in assuming that when the task starts processing the new target, it will archive data to the same archive as the old target?

Thanks

Decomission

I need a solution

We wish to decomission an EV 7.5 environment now that we have migrated to EV 10.  Our main concern is that we know some users have PST or MSG emails saved on network drives.  We know that sometimes these users open these emails which triggers a connection to the old 7.5 legacy EV server if the email has an attachment (there is still a reference to the old EV server).  I found this out when a user did not have access to a MSG file's attachment and a check on the local log showed it was downloading it from the old EV server.  What is the best way to monitor the connections to the old EV server so we can capture the users that are still connecting to the old EV server?  We want to know the scope of the connections before decomissioning.
